Paradise Valley Fire District (PVFD) is providing free smoke alarms to their district residents who need them, specifically to those who are at “high risk” of injury should their home catch on fire.
“Many people underestimate the speed and power of fire, especially with the newer building materials and home furnishings used today,” said Mike Glazier, Paradise Valley’s new Fire Chief. “Depending on the house, you may only have a few minutes before the house is full of smoke or the entire structure is in flames. It can be really fast,” said Glazier. Additionally, certain homes have a higher risk of a house fire becoming fatal because their residents may not be able to react as quickly. According to the National Fire Protection Agency, these “high risk” homes are those that house senior citizens, persons with disabilities, or have children under age 14. Homes with old smoke alarms (10 years or older) or that do not have any functional smoke alarms are also at high risk of a fatal house fire. Smoke alarms are crucial to alerting residents of fire early on, so they have as much time as possible to get out of the house and call 9-1-1.
PVFD has received a grant from the Max and Wilma Owen Memorial Fund in the Idaho Community Foundation and has purchased smoke alarms for high-risk families within the Paradise Valley District. If you live in Paradise Valley Fire District and fall into one of the “high risk” categories, there are two ways you can get your free smoke alarms:
- Come to the Main Station on any Thursdays, from 6-7 pm
- Call, text, or email the PVFD Fire Chief, Mike Glazier (208-304-4565, chief@paradisevalleyfire.com) to schedule a pick-up at the main fire station.
Free smoke alarms will be available to Paradise Valley District residents until supplies run out, so get yours soon!
